G DATA AntiVirus 2010 Overview

G DATA AntiVirus 2010 is among the best in malware detection and removal. It had the highest detection rate, identifying on average 99 percent of the 722,372 collected samples of Trojan horses, worms, password-stealer, and other nasties. It identified and removed 100 percent of the files and Registry changes that malware had put in place. The program’s front end is crisply rendered and neatly groups together the various arms of the suite, with one drop-down menu per section to quickly access the main tasks such as running a virus scan.
It is effective at keeping computer safe from all sorts of malware, including viruses, trojans, browser hijackers, dialer, worms, phishing scams and rootkits and also protects on all fronts, from email to instant messaging. It comes with a boot CD that can be used on computer prior to installation. The boot CD can run a safe Linux-based scan to locate and remove rootkits, making it possible to load antivirus software on a completely virus-free system. The other good option is its ability to scan removable media for malware. USB flash drives, memory cards, CD and DVD-roms, and external hard drives can be checked. G DATA could be set to monitor emails you send to others and make sure that you don’t accidentally pass on malware.

What We Found

Its performance was excellent, picking up trojans that a previous scan with another program missed. Definitions are updated every five or ten minutes or so and we were highly impressed with its antivirus capabilities. There’s also the option to turn off one of the engines for a faster scanning speed (although not quite as thorough protection). We also found that the definition updates happen automatically and scans can also be set to automatic. will intelligently pause a scan if you’re running other programs and the system load shoots up, a useful touch. The suite’s firewall is also well, ‘firewall and forget’, since it operates using an autopilot which makes all the decisions about accepting connections. No pop-ups or user intervention are required, so its ease of use is certainly maximized.

Pros:

  • G DATA Antivirus provides anti-phishing protection.
  • Also provides a parental control section rounds the package off, and it blocked all the dodgy test sites we attempted to browse.
  • It is among the best we’ve seen at malware detection and removal.
  • It is inexpensive and gives excellent malware protection

Cons:

  • Noisy popup alerts for signature file updates
  • Takes longer time for scanning
