McAfee Internet Security 2009 Overview
McAfee Internet Security 2009 is a complete Internet security package for Windows-based computers which includes antivirus, firewall features and Internet content filtering. It appears not much different from last year’s offering, a truth that masks some improvements in programming under the hood. But it once again offers more features than Norton Internet Security 2009 and integrates them with a more intuitive user interface, the one that allows you to understand the specific feature and also to tweak its settings.
The McAfee Internet Security 2009 package is very easy to install and provides an excellent range of system protection tools. Configuration is not arduous and once completed, the user should be able to relax.
Main Features
- In addition to antivirus, antiphishing, antispyware, and a personal firewall, McAfee provides a backup-and-restore feature and several handy utilities
- It enhanced over last year’s version is the integration of antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and antiphishing
- McAfee provides you with more than adequate protection
- The main control panel divides the protection features into four categories : Computer & Files, Internet & Network, E-mail & IM and Parental Controls
- The menu system for these is reasonable but at times we wished there was a ‘Back’ button. Simple and advanced versions of the menu also exist
- It includes a lock-down feature to completely block internet access in an emergency
- It also completely removes old, unwanted files by secure deletion
- It supports Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, as well as POP3 and MAPI
New Features
McAfee’s Active Protection (also known as Artemis) that lets the product detect and remove a new threat that is only minutes old. There is also a new enterprise-class spam protection available. McAfee includes support for Outlook, Eudora, and Thunderbird in its protection, as well as MAPI, POP3 and Web connections
It’s near-instant communication with the master signature database back at McAfee. Whenever a new malicious software is trapped by it, protection is sent back to the desktop rather than waiting for the new update
Interface Guidance
It grants access to logs, account details and Windows tools, including Scheduler and Disk Defragmenter. Each menu item offers a brief description along with its on or off buttons. It is a great support feature for novice users. It needs to provide a balance between offering the user adequate information and being easy to use. McAfee Internet Security 2009 does a reasonable job, but it also leaves room for improvement.
Enex suggestions include a back button for configuration screens and a more accessible firewall-lockdown button. It integrates all of its tools in one location. Just like a webpage, McAfee lists all of its tools on the left-hand navigations and system status on the right. Also the basic settings and advanced settings are both easy to understand and use.
