Norton Internet Security 2009 Overview

Norton Internet Security 2009 (NIS) has been totally redesigned for better performance. They also now have a “real” uninstall option to remove NIS from your computer, it really does remove everything except the licensing data if you ever want to reinstall. It pairs excellent malware detection and cleanup with a smooth, intuitive interface and a good range of features. Norton enhances its home network monitor, giving you a system administrator’s perspective on the relative health and security of all the computers within your home. There is an antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, intrusion protection, email/messaging scanning, identity safe, and anti-phishing. It has a free expert help via email, live chat, or over the phone with a single click.

Main Features

  • Spend more time using your computer and less time waiting for your security software to perform
  • Pulse updates for up-to-the-minute protection delivered every 5 to 15 minutes to detect and eliminate new threats.
  • Intelligence-driven for faster, fewer, shorter scans By leveraging a unique online intelligence system, Norton Insight targets only those files at risk.
  • Blocks online identity theft
  • Monitor your home network and more safely connect to Wi-Fis
  • Two-way firewall automatically makes security decisions for you
  • Stops viruses, worms, spyware, bots, and more
  • Prevents virus-infected emails and instant messages from spreading
  • Blocks browser exploits and protects against infected web sites

New Features

  • Norton Insight significantly reduces scan load
  • Silent Mode accommodates uninterrupted movies or video games
  • Safe Web streamlines internet security
  • SONAR (Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response) proactively detects and defends from unknown threats.

Interface guidance

The software’s dashboard is better than ever, which centralizes controls and makes the entire page easier than you might expect. Also big improvements were also made in monitoring as it is now very easy to see what sort of impact Norton is having on CPU load. As it turns out, it’s not very high, and the memory footprint was generally around the 7MB mark.

What We Found

We find the software you of suspicious sites, investigate problematic files, and do all the other things that these security programs do. Full system scans runs at a nice pace, but this is more a factor of how many files you have and how fast your computer is than anything else. Unless you are a security professional it’s hard to say that one suite is better than any other, but Norton Internet Security did detect problems when they were presented, updates were made seamlessly, it did not interfere with general use.
One thing to note is that the package is so extensive that you probably won’t use half of it. It deliver more frequent and thus smaller signature updates, whitelisting to streamline scan times, and a lighter, sleeker footprint that installs in mere minutes.
Pros:

  • Clean on reboot solves a problem we encountered in previous versions of NIS.
  • Addition to the standard signature detection NIS 2009 includes SONAR
  • Free email, chat or phone support.

Cons:

  • It doesn’t have an online backup option.
  • Also it doesn’t tune up the pc as compared to Norton 360
  • It slows down the system a bit.
