Panda Security has launched its latest product, this one is specifically made for Mac users.

Credit: Panda Security

The security firm today unveiled Panda Antivirus for the Mac, designed to defend Mac OS and OS X users against viruses, spyware, adware, and other forms of malware. In addition to scanning e-mail and local files on the Mac, the new software will prevent Mac users from unknowingly sending malware infected documents to friends and colleagues running Windows or any other operating system, Panda said.

Moving beyond the computer, the software will also scan iPhones, iPads, and iPods to make sure those portable gadgets aren’t delivering malware to other devices or to the Macs themselves.

Priced at $49.95 for a one-year license, Panda Antivirus for Mac can be downloaded from Panda’s Web site starting today. A free trial version is also available.

Panda’s announcement comes that same day that Apple is hosting a “Back to the Mac” event, at which it will discuss, among other things, the next major version of Mac OS X.

The question of whether Macs need antivirus protection has long been debated. Many experts and users have felt that the Mac’s relatively small market share has kept it off the radar of malware writers. But as its market share creeps up and more threats come directly from the Web rather than through local files, Mac users may find themselves more vulnerable.

In a recent interview with CNET, J.R. Smith, CEO of antivirus company AVG, said that even though there’s lot less malware for Macs, the threat does exist, especially with the browser as the potential port of entry.

At one point almost two years ago, even Apple was recommending that Mac users install antivirus software, pointing out that the Mac was susceptible to Web-based malware. However, the company quickly switched gears and removed that bit of advice from its Web site the following day.

On its end, Panda naturally is touting a need for its new Mac antivirus software.

“We are approaching a tipping point where it will soon be financially viable for cybercriminals to target their efforts at Mac users,” Ivan Fermon, senior vice president of product management for Panda Security, said in a statement. “When Apple reaches 15 percent market share worldwide, which Panda expects will happen very soon, we predict that hackers will begin to aggressively target attacks against this platform. The rapid increase in use of Apple-powered devices–iPhones, iPods, iPads–is also making the Mac platform a much more attractive target.”

According to market researchers IDC and Gartner, Apple isn’t yet in the top 5 PC vendors worldwide–Asus comes in at No. 5 with 5.4 percent market share–but in the U.S., Apple has reached the No. 3 spot with 10.6 percent of the market.

Panda said that it knows of around 5,000 strains of malware designed specifically to target Apple computers, with around 500 new samples popping up each month. The company pointed out that phishing scams and scareware rely on the trust of the victim rather than on malicious code, making them a potential threat to all computer users. More vulnerabilities are also being discovered on the Mac, added Panda, with 175 so far this year compared with only 34 in 2009.

In some cases, remnants of the installation settings may remain and can result in an error. If this occurs, try Microsoft’s Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Note that this is not the same as the Windows-provided uninstall feature in Add/Remove Programs. The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility only removes installation settings and should be used with caution. You can read more about this tool and download a copy at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/

After uninstalling BitDefender, reboot your PC. Do not attempt to install any other antivirus or firewall software until after a reboot has been performed.

The White House has declassified parts of a top secret plan outlining how government will protect the nation’s computer networks from cyber warfare.

The announcement by cybersecurity tsar Howard Schmidt was made at the world’s biggest security event.

The move is aimed at encouraging greater co-operation between academia, government and the private sector.

“We have to fully recognise the importance cybersecurity has in our lives,” Mr Schmidt said.

“We must continue to seek out innovative new partnerships – not only within government, but also among industry, government and the American public,” he told delegates at the event, hosted by the security company RSA in San Francisco.

It was his first major speech to industry peers since being appointed to the job in December 2009.

The Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI) was introduced in 2008 by then-President George W Bush.

Going public

There are 12 parts to the CNCI, including cyber counterintelligence and deterrence strategies.

For the first time the government has published a general description of what they are on its website.

The aim of the programme is threefold:

To establish a front line of defence against today’s immediate threats

To defend against the full spectrum of threats

To strengthen the future cybersecurity environment

The CNCI funds a number of sensitive projects including the government’s Einstein technology, which focuses on securing the vast computer network that operates under the dot.gov domain, as well as detecting attempts to access those systems.

sign who’s your hacker
The president has likened threats to the internet to that of a nuclear attack

The document acknowledges that traditional security approaches have fallen short, but says the federal government is moving forward in outlining “grand challenges” for the research community to help solve.

Mr Schmidt said the declassification would show that the government has a workable strategy for protecting the nation’s computer systems in the event of a cyber attack.

Parts of the initiative that deal with the nation’s offensive plans for cyberwarfare have not been made public.

‘Common sense’

Reaction to the announcement ranged from caution to praise.

One supporter is Michael Markulec, chief operating officer for Lumeta, a company that provides large organisations and government agencies with secure network solutions.

“This move brings more people to the table – organisations like mine that play in the cybersecurity space, experts here at the RSA who are currently not involved in discussions because they have been at a classified level inside the government.

“So this allows more people to play and given that 85% of the critical infrastructure is not in government hands, it certainly makes sense to include the rest of the expertise,” Mr Markulec told BBC News.

Hilton Collins of Government Technology Magazine agrees.

“The private sector has so much knowledge, power and money that for them to help the government innovate more technology security solutions is the right way to go.”

The Electronic Privacy Information Centre (Epic), which had demanded the full text of the CNCI, said it was pleased about the declassification.

However the group said it still wanted to see the full document and what privacy safeguards are in place when assessing cyber threats.
