Do you think your PC needs Antivirus Software?

If you think your computer needs antivirus software, then think again!! My first question is what is your requirement? How often you surf? To what extent and to which website to go to? and many more.

I find many people asking me the same question again and again. So here I am to clear your doubts.

The first thing is before you select any antivirus software, make sure that you of what computer you have. If you have a high end system, then you can go with the best security softwares in market, for eg, Norton 360, Kaspersky Internet Security etc. If you go with this high end security software then you don’t need firewall protection at all. I don’t understand why people want to pay for antivirus software seperately and firewall software seperately. And after that they start asking people why it makes computer slow and other problem arises.

If you have computer of low configuration then opt for avast and avira products. They use less memory compare to other software and they have good virus detection rate.

The overall user of internet falls in three categories as per my observation:

1. Top Internet Users : This are some of the users, say around 20%, who surf internet day and night, and who wants maximum protection, because they are 24 hours prone to internet viruses. Also, for many of them internet is the bread and butter or a part of it. So they really have important assets to protect, for them I would advise not to comprise with free antivirus and other softwares. Go with the maximum protection. My choice will be Norton 360, Kasperky Internet Security, Zonealarm Internet Security or Bitdefender Internet Security 2010. No doubt this software are little costly, but there is nothing more important then the assets you have on your system. YOU DON’T WANT TO GET UP ONE MORNING AND SEE THAT YOU GET CHECKDISK ERROR ON YOUR COMPUTER WHICH HAS YOUR VERY IMPORTANT FILES!!

2. Intermediate Internet Users : This are some of the users, say around 30%, which surf to some extent, work, and do other stuff like social networking, and social media on internet. For them an intermediate software will also go like Norton Antivirus 2010, Avast Antivirus 2010, Avira Antivir premium and other best antivirus. You can use any of these which also have firewall in built.

3. Low Internet Users : They are many of these kind of users, say around 50%, who surf just for fun or other stuff not related to work, they also need the maximum protection because the viruses target these kind of people a lot. This people are go to websites from where maximum attact of virus happen, like downloading videos, ringtones, music and playing games online and many other stuff. This attract hell lot of viruses or I can say give invitation to them. So you as compare to protection, in the same boat, as the first category, what I would prefer is to spend a little more on protection of your computer rather then wasting on buying a new one or getting it repaired.
